Living Water Academy is committed to exploring the best possible environment for our students to learn. The teachers, in conjunction with the administration, have developed a comprehensive program for our students that allows them to walk through the important state and national standards in preparation for their admission to High School. All the while, we continue to be focused upon keeping Christ at the focus of the educational process and view each subject area through the lens of a Biblical Christian Worldview.
CURRICULUM
KINDERGARTEN
BIBLE
Kindergarteners at LWA are taught familiar Bible truths that emphasize God's loving care using the Purposeful Design Elementary Bible Series, with the goal of developing a Christian worldview. Students work through the major Bible stories learning about how God relates to His creation. In doing so they examine major characters and how we can imitate their desires to follow God while keeping God as the main character in His Story. LANGUAGE ARTS
Students begin learning through a systematic communication approach. This includes early reading skills, oral communication and written communication. Students will use letter sounds and phonics to decode unfamiliar words as well as learn manuscripts for the formation of letters and words. It is amazing to see the progress they are able to make in this area in one year. MATHEMATICS
Students start with the basics are they are able to learn to recognize and count numbers from 0-100. They learn calendar skills, telling time, counting and identifying money. By the end of the year our students are able to add facts to 10 and are beginning to learn subtraction facts. |
SCIENCE
Kindergarteners at LWA study science through satisfying their curiosity about the wonders of the world around them! They learn that God has a plan for each part of His creation and that He not only made each living thing, but He also cares for it. We partner new truths for them with Bible truths that allow them to view the world they live in through God’s eyes. SOCIAL STUDIES
The purpose and goal of history is to prepare our kindergarteners to become good citizens. Good citizenship must begin with the study of America's Christian foundations. The textbook we use as a springboard for history is "The American People and Nation" by Christian Liberty Press. Students also spend a significant amount of time learning about the various roles that people play in our community. We are blessed to have many visitors come to our class to share how they are able to serve others in the community. ENRICHMENT

FIRST grade
BIBLE
Students will learn familiar Bible truths that emphasize God’s relationship to people using the Purposeful Design Elementary Bible Series, with the goal of developing a Christian worldview. Students begin to do in-depth character studies of common stories of the Bible. Students begin to learn their way to navigate their Bibles and have opportunities to read and share Bible verses with one another in class. LANGUAGE ARTS
Students will use early rules of phonics to enhance word decoding skills and increase sight word vocabulary. Additional practice is provided in reading orally and silently while developing comprehension skills and evaluating what has been read. As they progress through the year they are able to go from reading short children’s books to a full chapter book by the end the year! Our students will learn to capitalize significant words; end a sentence with correct punctuation and write original stories on specific topics. Students will use proper manuscript when writing words and sentences. By the end of the year students are prepared to begin cursive. MATHEMATICS
Students will learn the concepts of counting, writing and reading numbers, place value, addition and subtraction, money, graphs, measurement, time, temperature, and factions. The student will use real world situations to stretch their thinking ability. In doing so, the students are able to see the many ways that they are dependent upon understand math so that they can function in our society. |
SCIENCE
Our students will focus on establishing a foundation of science facts and skills to further scientific learning. By encouraging active participation, we are able to facilitate understanding and instill a love of learning in science. Topics that are covered include senses, weather, seasons, health and safety, animals, matter, sound, plants, and forces. All lessons are presented within a Biblical Worldview to help the student develop knowledge of God the Creator. SOCIAL STUDIES
We introduce students to fundamental concepts related to Geography, Economics, and culture. This takes place within the context of American History from European Exploration and Colonization days to 1682. All lessons are presented within a Biblical Worldview to help the student develop knowledge of God. ENRICHMENT

SECOND grade
BIBLE
Students in 2nd Grade continue to build upon the foundations of previous Bible lessons. At this point, students begin to study both positive examples of individuals that are following God’s Commands and negative examples of those who are choosing to disobey God’s Commands. Students then focus on how God is a gracious God who is slow to anger, but also one who requires atonement for sin. This study continues our Purposeful Design Elementary Bible Series. LANGUAGE ARTS
We provide our students with a foundation in sentence structure, language development, and grammar. By using special phonics sounds we are able help expand vocabulary, enhance word analysis skills, and increase reading speed. Intentional practice is organized for reading orally and silently while developing comprehension and evaluation skills. Students also begin exploring various age/level appropriate novels as they learn about their authors. Written communication is also emphasized as students begin to write dictated words and sentences, compose complete sentences with subject and predicate, create descriptive sentences, and learn about the revision process for correcting spelling and sentence structures. For their final writing project students create their very own fairy tale. Our class also focuses on the formation, size, spacing, and slant used in cursive writing. We practice our cursive across the curriculum. MATHEMATICS
We sharpen students’ basic arithmetic skills and use them in new areas such as carrying in addition, borrowing in subtraction, and applying fractions. Students grapple with practical word problems to boost students’ ability to think and solve problems. In doing so we focus upon using manipulatives to aid understanding and differentiating within the classroom to meet the needs of our students. Students also begin to see the design and order that God has placed in His creation. |
SCIENCE
We explore a student’s ability to use science process skills to discover truths of God’s Creation and learn how we can share this knowledge with others. We focus on what scientists do, living things, plants, environments, fossils and dinosaurs, the layers and features of the earth, how the earth moves, natural resources, light, forces and motion, and how the body works. Participation in hands-on activities and projects fuel these discoveries. SOCIAL STUDIES
We explore American culture in colonial times from Jamestown to the War for Independence. Students are able to learn about how life was structured for people in this time through discussions of colonial farming, shop keeping, clothing, and daily life. Students also are introduced to kings and queens in Europe ruling at the time. ENRICHMENT

THIRD GRADE
BIBLE
Students in 3rd Grade continue to build upon the foundations of previous Bible lessons. At this point, students begin to study perfect life of Christ and how He served others. Students also focus on the Early Church and look at missions from time of Paul until now. This study continues our Purposeful Design Elementary Bible Series. LANGUAGE ARTS
Students continue to build on sentence structure, language development and grammar. The students participate in literature circles using several novels throughout the year. After each novel is completed, students use various projects to show understanding and meaning of the novel. These projects allow students to be hands-on and creative. Students build their confidence as they memorize and perform various pieces of writing to their class. Our class also further develops cursive handwriting as we strive for excellence in penmanship. MATHEMATICS
Students master multiplication and division during third grade. They are able to use this knowledge to solve real life problems through word problems as well as measurement conversions. From there our students dive deeper into fractions. They learn how to reduce, add and subtract these parts as a whole. Intentional time is spent displaying how math is a way of recording and expressing the laws and relationships God created. |
SCIENCE
Students in 3rd grade focus upon matters of Earth Science. In doing so, we explore rocks, minerals, soil, weather, our solar system, living things, the human body, motion, energy and matter. As students dive deeper in these areas they are able to see how God uniquely created the world in which they live. SOCIAL STUDIES
In 3rd grade we focus on civics, government, and evaluating historical events in United States history from the Constitutional Convention through the Civil War. As we look at these significant historical events we tie them back to the Christian worldview by studying the role of Christians in shaping America. Student learning is enhanced by looking at various artwork, maps, graphs, photos, and field trips. ENRICHMENT

FOURTH GRADE
BIBLE
In fourth grade students study the basic doctrines of the Church. They learn that the Bible is true and how it relates to their own lives. They see that God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. Students are given tools to better study the scriptures and know how to apply them in their own lives. LANGUAGE ARTS
Student in fourth grade are mastering penmanship and grammar. In writing they are mastering skills of writing sentences with subject/verb agreement. They use a variety of sources to help with spelling. Students are able to diagram sentences and label the various elements of a sentence. They write papers on various topics. In reading students read various novels. They compare novels to other literary pieces, to themselves, the world and also the Christian worldview. They continue to build reading comprehension. MATHEMATICS
In 4th grade students solidify their understanding of square measures, simple geometry, proper and improper fractions. They also learn how to convert measures, factoring, divisibility rules, solve measurement equations, and graph drawings. They use story problems to answer various mathematical equations. |
SCIENCE
In fourth grade students look more in-depth at matter, energy, force, motion, living organisms, changes in ecosystems, and earth systems. They do various experiments and activities to create a deeper understanding of the concepts taught. Students use the scientific process and are able to see how God created everything little thing and how only He could do it. SOCIAL STUDIES
In fourth grade students spend a great deal of time learning about Missouri History. They look at Missouri from the beginning to now. They compare changes that have taken place in Missouri with those changes that have taken place in the United States. Students will take a field trip to Jefferson City at the end of the year. In geography they are able to describe the various regions, how they produce goods and services based on resources, and how changes in regions affect those living in them. Students are able to see the changes that have taken place over time in history and see how it is all part of God’s plan for the world. ENRICHMENT

FIFTH GRADE
BIBLE
5th Grade is our final year that utilizes the Purposeful Design Elementary Bible Series. The students are able to do an in-depth study of the Old Testament. In doing so they trace the Prophecies of Christ, Promises of God, and the theme of redemption throughout the history of Israel. Students get a big picture view of how everything is a part of God’s plan for redeeming mankind. LANGUAGE ARTS
Students in Fifth Grade begin to focus upon independent and group opportunities to discuss literary elements such as plot, setting, and character understandings. Students also begin to develop important facets of the writing process through exploring sentence parts and structures. They are able to display their progress through various written styles such as letters, thank you notes, outlines, book reports, and creative writing projects. MATHEMATICS
With many foundational items in place, students are able to begin adding complex levels to mathematics. Students are introduced to graphing and graphing concepts, algebraic equations, complex division including division of fractions and three digit divisors, as well as advancing geometric understanding. They also begin to convert fractions to decimals and vice versa. In doing so, students display their understanding through real world word problem applicable to students. |
SCIENCE
Students continue their explorations of scientific processes through their studies of forces of energy and matter. They are able to see how forces must be applied to items to cause motion as well as the elements of nature that limit motion. Students also examine organisms and their ecosystem as well as the Earth’s systems and our solar system. Emphasis is placed on acquiring knowledge through hands on experimentation and observation. SOCIAL STUDIES
Students view the events of European and World History from 1900 through the Cold War. In doing so, they are able to see America’s role in the important World events as well as to do conduct in-depth studies upon other cultures, leaders, and societies. Students also focus on Geography skills such as, map making, topography, latitude and longitude, time zones, and natural boundaries. SIXTH GRADE
BIBLE
Middle School is a crucial age for an individual as they begin to be able to evaluate what sources have an influence upon his or her life. Our Lightbearers Curriculum is a worldview curriculum that instructs the student on how they can assess the role that each of these sources should have on a person’s life. During this process we will establish a Biblical Worldview through which to evaluate any information we come into contact with so it is viewed through the lenses of Scripture. We also separate our classes into MS Boys and Girls so that they can cover gender specific topics related to our Christ and Culture Curriculum. LANGUAGE ARTS
Students will work through various novels, short stories, poems, and non-fiction articles focusing on text to text and text to self connections. As students process these connections, they will utilize the writing process to produce narratives, journal entries, reports, and other writing forms to express their findings. Correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation are emphasized in these communications as well. Students also expand their vocabulary through text driven vocabulary list as well as their understanding, usage, and recognition of figurative language. MATHEMATICS
The approach at LWA for Middle School math studies involves an individualized plan for our students. Students take a placement exam at the beginning of the school year as well as a final exam to move forward to the next level. This approach allows students with a particular aptitude the opportunity to progress at their own pace. Our students primarily use the Saxon Math text in these classes. Core concepts are emphasized while students strive to demonstrate mastery before moving forward conceptually. Sixth Grade students are generally placed in Saxon Course 1 or BJU Fundamentals of Math courses. |
SCIENCE
The goal of LWA's Sixth Grade science curriculum is to meet the norms set forth by the Missouri Department of Education (MDE) and the requirements of the National Science Education Standards.Our curriculum views each of these standards through a Biblical Christian Worldview based upon God’s creation of the earth. Students will learn to view science through our understanding of God’s created order. Sixth Grade students focus upon the area of Life Science. They will study living organisms from the cellular level all the way up the complex ecosystems that they live in. All through this process they will see God’s great design plan for the interconnected nature of His creation. SOCIAL STUDIES
Students can look forward to studying various aspects of Ancient History from Creation through the Medieval Times. In this journey they can cover important facets of Ancient Near Eastern Cultures and Geography. Significant time is also spent on studying major empires including the Greeks, Romans, Mayans, African Empires, Byzantines, and Asian Empires. ENRICHMENT

This includes the pre-reading process, during reading comprehension, post-reading evaluation, and purposes of reading. Students also continue to develop their spelling, grammar, and vocabulary through text specific assignments. MATHEMATICS

Students take a placement exam at the beginning of the school year as well as a final exam to move forward to the next level. This approach allows students with a particular aptitude the opportunity to progress at their own pace. Our students primarily use the Bob Jones University math texts in these classes. Core concepts are emphasized while students strive to demonstrate mastery before moving forward conceptually. Seventh students are generally placed in BJU Fundamentals of Math or BJU Pre-Algebra courses. |
SCIENCE
The goal of LWA's Eighth Grade science curriculum is to meet the norms set forth by the Missouri Department of Education (MDE) and the requirements of the National Science Education Standards.Our curriculum views each of these standards through a Biblical Christian Worldview based upon God’s creation of the earth. Students will learn to view science through our understanding of God’s created order. Students in this class will cover significant aspects of Earth Science including our atmosphere, hydrosphere, land, and energy. Students will also explore aspects of weather and the impact that humans are having upon on the earth in terms of preservation of resources and ecosystems or destruction of these items through their actions. SOCIAL STUDIES
Students can look forward to studying various aspects of European History from the Origins of Britain through the Colonization of the New World. In this process they cover many important families of Europe including the Houses of Lancaster and York, The Tudors, and The Medicis. Students also spend significant time tracing the important religious threads through this period of History. These include The Spanish Inquisition, The Protestant Reformation, The Age of Reason, as well as people groups such as the Puritans, Pilgrims, Mennonites, and Amish. Students also examine the Atlantic Slave Trade and discuss how each person is created in God’s image. ENRICHMENT
